Watch Elect is a non-profit corporation based in South Africa with a focus on media technology and democracy. Watch Elect conceptualises and manages unique media campaigns and is engaged in ongoing election and democracy related research. Watch Elect engages in civic and voter education through the production of short videos and offers media related training and support.
During the entire period of the run up to election, Watch Elect proclaims a very particular observer position: See, Observe, Share. This position works on the premise that all citizens are observers and care about democratic principles. Watch Elect builds tools that support civil society workers in the field, bringing together years of experience onto digital platforms using digital research methodologies and technology.
The goal of Watch Elect is to serve as an elections intermediary by mobilising citizens to engage in election news, expectations, and voting. WE reports on electoral related matters in communities and their immediate surroundings. Our goal is two-fold: firstly, to share information about elections to citizens. And secondly, we gather data about the contexts around elections, pulling together information that gives us the most expansive insights into election related issues: conflict and violence, political party relations, regime changes and consistencies, and the integrity of the electoral process. In ‘non’ election times WE continues to mobilise and educate on digital platforms to monitor the democratic institutions and performance of the state on matters that impact on the lives of citizens. WE is an election period hub.
